Academic Regalia

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Delaware is postponing the 2020 Commencement ceremony. Please note that this not a cancellation.

Please join us online at 11:00am on Saturday, May 30 for a tribute to the Class of 2020.

If you already placed a regalia order:

In the next few days, Herff Jones will notify all customers who purchased regalia prior to the postponement via email inquiring whether you would like to keep your purchase and have it shipped to your home or cancel your order.

  • If you wish to have your gown shipped:
    • All orders will be shipped to your home. Shipping must be in the United States and will begin when the Herff Jones plant reopens in Illinois. Please do not ship your order to the Bookstore, which is closed and not receiving any shipments until further notice.
    • These orders will be non-returnable, due to the personal nature of the products.
  • If you wish to cancel your order, Herff Jones will refund your purchases to the same form of tender.

If you want to place a regalia order:

  • The site https://colleges.herffjones.com/college/ud/ is currently open.
  • All orders will be shipped to your home, free of charge. Shipping must be in the United States and will begin when the Herff Jones plant reopens in Illinois. Please do not ship your order to the Bookstore, which is closed and not receiving any shipments until further notice.
  • These orders will be non-returnable, due to the personal nature of the products.
  • This site will not close on April 13, 2020. It will remain open indefinitely while the University identifies a plan, allowing you to purchase regalia at a later date.

If you want to purchase individual items (such as just the tassel):

Unfortunately, the site does not allow for individual purchases, such as just a tassel. Once the bookstore has reopened (when the Governor’s mandate on non-essential retail is lifted) we can accommodate your orders then. In the meantime, you can contact us at bksudel@bncollege.com.

Doctoral Candidates

Doctoral candidates rent their cap, gown and hood. Your order can be held and delivered to the Bookstore when your Hooding Ceremony is rescheduled. You can also request a refund. The rental price is $155.00 for gown, hood, tam and tassel.

How to Wear Your Graduation Hood and Cap

The Graduation hood depends on your major and degree. The pictures below are for a Bachelor of Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. Your regalia may be a different color or style, but the instructions for wearing the hood are the same.

  1. Place the hood around your neck and shoulders so that the major portion hangs down your back and the velvet border is up.
  2. If possible, fasten the cord on the front of the hood to your shirt or dress to help keep the hood away from your neck.
  3. Looking from the front, the velvet border should be on the top.
  4. Looking from the back, the satin lining of the hood should be exposed by rolling the velvet border back. The tip (or tail) should be pointing away from you.
  5. Caps are to be worn squarely on top of the head with tassel:
  • Right side for bachelors’ and associates’ degree candidates, after degrees are conferred, move the tassel to the left side.
  • Left side for doctoral and masters’ degree candidates.
